Source: Walker Howard to have surgery on torn oblique

Feel terrible for him.

I really feel for that kid right now.

Very tough break for the young man. Feel bad for him. Wishing him a speedy and full recovery.

Matt Moscona called us Louisiana.

Oh boy.

Hope Beale can step up now that he knows he is the guy.

Maybe we’re due for another Jake Delhomme situation with Coleman Carter eventually stepping in as starting QB for most of the season.

This only works if our receivers stop dropping the ball.

Beale was Sampson’s high school qb so maybe that helps

Sampson better put some pine tar on his hands this week. He look as bad as I have ever seen a receive look at any level against Rice.

Its an improbable and terrible streak of QB injuries since 2022, which is the opposite of 2018-2021.

Oct. 1, 2022, vs. South Alabama: Fields has an “upper body” injury in 1st quarter.

Nov. 15-18, 2022: Wooldridge tears ACL in practice during the week of FSU game, out for season.

December 22, 2022, vs. Houston, Independence Bowl: Chandler Fields injured in 3rd quarter.

Spring 2023: Zeon Chriss takes all snaps in Spring, as Fields underwent an unexpected medical procedure and missed spring practice, while Ben Wooldridge was rehabbing his knee.

Sep. 16, 2023, at UAB: with 10:30 left to go in the 1st quarter, Ben Wooldridge sacked and suffered season-ending foot injury.

Nov. 4, 2023, at Arkansas State: Zeon Chriss suffers season-ending leg injury in 4th quarter

November 16, 2024, vs. South Alabama: Wooldridge breaks collarbone in 3rd quarter.

Dec. 7, 2024, vs. Marshall: Chandler Fields leaves SBC Championship Game at the beginning of the 2nd quarter after getting injured.

August 30, 2025, vs. Rice: Walker Howard tears abdominal muscle, out for an unknown time.

I’m convinced Sharon Moss stole some of his life energy during the commercial shoot.

So do we have a strength and conditioning issue here at UL, or is it just bad luck? I always wondered if strength & conditioning might play a role.

  1. Poor training can leave any athlete more vulnerable to soft tissue injuries.
  2. Quarterbacks especially, need strong cores and balanced muscle groups to absorb contact without overstressing joints.
  3. If UL’s conditioning staff doesn’t properly manage workload, fatigue can make players more injury-prone.

BUT…. Here are 5 reasons I think it could be more and just conditioning.

  1. QBs are frequent targets of high-impact hits from the defense. Even elite conditioning can’t prevent a blindside sack.
  2. Weak pass protection in the Cajun’s OL exposes our QBs to more and harder hits.
  3. A single awkward landing or helmet to the knee can sideline even the most durable athlete.
  4. Once a QB has had certain injuries (like Woolridge’s shoulder or an ACL), reinjury risk goes up regardless of conditioning.
  5. Mobile QBs who run often put themselves in harm’s way more than pocket passers.

This crappy pattern of QB injuries might hint at a systemic issue at UL, like poor protection schemes, risky play-calling, or even gaps in the Cajun’s strength and conditioning program.

I think it isnt attributable to conditioning alone. I think it’s a combination of physical preparation, protection, medical management, and just plain ole bad Cajuns luck.

With surgery on an oblique muscle, what is the recovery/rehab timeline?

“They” said 6-8 weeks for a re-eval. But it is season ending.

I sure would like to hear how to the workouts today compare to those of the Hud years. There are defiantly less stair to run up in our new stadium.

It depends on the severity of the tear. Here is a chart I found online for recovery time.

Typical Recovery Time:

  • Mild tears: 2-6 weeks

  • Moderate tears: 6-12 weeks

  • Severe tears: 12-16 weeks or longer

Based on this chart it would seem the tear is assumed to be moderate. However, once he has surgery that can change.

It is being reported that Howard will be out for the year.

KLFY website says he’s officially out for the season. Feel terrible for him.

Hopefully he takes his medical and comes back for 2 more years, could be an incredible story.
