LETTER: Technology is disconnecting Acadiana. Here’s how we can fix it

This is a letter sent to The Current. The author mentions attendance at UL Football games as part of the evidence of disconnection. Are our attendance woes part of a larger trend in our community or is the author overlooking others causes of disconnection? Would love to hear your thoughts.

I purchased a new grill and a additional case of beer plus 4 steaks every weekend for football season for what it costs me In Season Tickets + parking.

Covid lifted the veil unfortunately..

Many people had their list of ‘unmissable’ events - Mardi Gras, Festival, UL games, etc - and whether by choice or by decree, they missed them… and the sun still came up the next day, except with another couple hundred bucks in their pockets

I agree with the author that people need to put down the phone and get out of the house, but a lot of events are not priced competitively against “staying in” or “convenience.” The author cites Acadiana Symphony Orchestra; to take a family of four to one of those shows it will cost you $250-$350 in tickets alone.

Another factor missing from the article is burn out. Both parents typically work in a modern family. By the time the weekend comes around and church and kids’ extracurriculars are done, there’s no energy left.

Sorry but I could not get past the 2nd paragraph. Writer is disconnected.

Festivals and outdoor activities in Acadiana has done nothing but grow and I don’t see a chance in sight.

It might be overused but it’s a part of our culture that will never change. It’s in our DNA. Very Cajun loves a good party with good music, food, and beverages.

One problem I see for football is dead time during games. TV has made in stadium watching terrible. Commercial timeouts kill the excitement. If I wasn’t a diehard, I wouldn’t attend games.

it seems like every year it gets worse. Get rid of TV timeouts and only cut to commercials at the end of quarters and during halftime. Do a split screen if you want to run ads during play. Stop cutting into the joy of watching something live just to make a buck.

I agree with too many commercial breaks during the games on espn+. When there are breaks there aren’t adds. Just says commercial break. What’s the point of these breaks if there aren’t adds?? They should be eliminated. You go to a game live and there’s 45 minutes to an hour of dead time.

They badly need to improve WiFi/ cell reception during games. As someone who attends every home game- Being “disconnected “ during games is a deterrent to attend IMO

The superdome with 70k has better cell service than Cajun field with 15k

Being “disconnected “ during games is a deterrent to attend IMO

I think the real problem is the “need” to always be connected to our devices. Why can’t we “disconnect” for a few hours to connect with our fellow fans and the team we love?

I hear you on that. Like I said I’m there either way. Can’t say the same about our extremely “casual” fan base

But if we are competing and charging for a “premium experience” there’s needs to be a connection

The fact that gameday management makes multiple failed attempts at QR codes for gameday programs and non-existent Chick-fil-A app rewards tells me they intend for the fan base to be connected during the games

Who’s your service provider? Im with Tmobile and have Zero issues with cell service at stadium. Now, I know multiple people with ATT and they have ISSUES.

Same, no issues with T-Mobile

Its 100% an AT&T problem.. that network gets congested just driving around Costco

I switched from AT&T years ago when a 30 minute search for my family inside of Cajun Field ended when I found my daughter in the Acadian Ambulance room. Wife tried numerous times to get a hold of me (phone and text) to let me know daughter was having a bad nose bleed.

After I went to Verizon, no issue. Now I’m with T-Mobile and still no issue.

I like to be connected inside the stadium to follow along stats. Not a constant connection but its nice to be able to look up things like that during a game.

Same here. And of course in the event that there is a personal or work emergency

I have ATT and have zero problems while traveling around the country except when I’m at Cajun field . Currently at DFW airport

I think AT&T is still running off those Centennial towers around Cajun Field.

That’s ridiculous. The ironic part is there are 3-4 local companies based around Carencro that install cell phone towers all over the Gulf south region . AT&T needs to step their shit up

After reading this thread, I just texted my wife and told her we should look into switching from AT&T to T-Mobile… Thanks, degenerates!

Just stay away from their 5G internet. It’s about as reliable as ULM fan support.
