Fire Desormeaux

It’s a smart point.

The spread option was built my smaller school OCs to beat the big boys. Well now that the big boys have not only implemented it but perfected it, it’s probably time to go back to the basics and beat them with fundamentals.

I’m in this same boat. UL needs to become the college version of Acadiana High.

Everybody in the stadium knows you’re going to line up and run the split-back veer, and they’ll do it until you stop them.

Just get REALLY good at running something, to the point where you can go to recruits and portal players and say “hey, we’re not big time football, but if you wanna show the world how good of a runner or run blocker you are, this is the place”

if you watch Navy it’s not the traditional triple option anymore. They are out of the gun and doing things different. Still has triple option concepts but much deeper than just that.

It’s the Veer and Shoot, I think it’s called, right? Doesn’t USM run a similar concept?

Things are different now. Gotta approach roster building and concepts much differently than you used too.

Here’s a good cut up of their offense against Rice.

I’ve been calling it power spread but you see a lot of flex bone, veer, etc.

I can watch Army and Navy offense all day.

A little more for the nerds out there…

Just go back to the Nelson Stokley offense. The only problem is it’s very complex and requires a ton of pre-snap reads and everyone needs to be on the same page in order to execute it.

It requires player development and it would improve our offensive play. It relies on scheming players open in the passing game, not relying on “athleticism” and jump balls.

We will not ever see something like that again.

In this era of 7v7 all-star ball? Nonstarter.

Ya’ll need me to give Ted Davidson a call??

Back to the OP: I love Des but he’s got some serious decisions to make this upcoming offseason. Everything has to be on the table. Staffing decisions, adjustments to their entire process from spring to fall, roles and responsibilities (i.e. do you want to be a HC or an OC?); everything has to be on the table.

I worry the injury bug for this season will prevent him from seeing that some significant changes must be made.

Logically speaking, sure.

But when a coach comes out in the media and says we’re “6 or 7 plays away,” after one of the most boondoggled games in 2 years (oh btw, it was almost a carbon copy of the last time USM came to CF), I find it hard to believe that will happen.

I expect stubbornness and more of the same. And I expect that to happen as long as the bulk of this offensive staff is in place.

Ted Davidson would never call a pass play (which went incomplete and turned into a 3 and out) to start an offensive drive following one that went 86 yards on 16 plays (13 of those being rushing attempts) for a TD.

We marched down the field and gained more rushing yards than we did against JMU the entire game on that 86 yard touchdown drive. Southern Miss even had to call a timeout to catch their breath. We get the ball back after a Southern Miss 3 and out to where their defense had no time to take a knee on the sideline. And do we take advantage of that continuing to gash them running the football? Nah. Instead, let’s call a deep ball to the sideline to Dale Martin for an incomplete pass and kill our rhythm.

It’s the little things like that as to why we are 2-5 and going for our 3rd losing season in 4 years.

Hud would’ve had us in bed by 9 let alone at a damn volleyball game

Lewis Cook … nah, nevermind. :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

The future of G6 football is either Air Raid or option offenses. No way any G6 keeps a good dual threat QB anymore. We have got to be smart about this. And you pearl clutchers who freak out at the mention of Air Raid/Option need to either get with the times or get out of the way.

I agree. I’m just speaking under the context that he is our coach through his contract.

The reality is we have a coach that is 25-22 with a good possibility of going under .500 by the end of this season. Staying the course is not an option. He must chart a new one.

We MIGHT buyout Des if Maggard decides not to come back as AD next year (IMO I think Maggard is tapped out here, due to the budget issues he helped create.). I believe the buyout would drop closer to 1.5M at that point. Either way, it would have to be fan raised… Admin is not spending a dime on a coaching buyout with our massive budget woes.

In the short term, a play calling change is DESPERATELY needed. Give it to Munoz, if he wants it. We are beyond the definition of insanity, doing the same things over and over and over, praying for a different outcome.

My biggest gripe at this moment in time, is that you have game planned for a preseason third string QB to produce over 70% of the offense (Also, Lunch tore his oblique last Wednesday, so how negligent is that?) That’s WAY more than you ever relied upon WH or DB. So, is that a lapse of preseason talent evaluation, a pitiful job game planning, not making necessary in-game play calling adjustments, or all of the above?

I’ll never call for a Cajuns coach’s job (Okay… besides Marlin), especially an alumni and former player. But if said coach will NOT hand over the offensive duties, and focus solely on his HC duties… that will be his own demise, regardless of what the fans say or how we feel.

It happened to Les Miles at TSAB, and it just happened to Billy at Florida. Both were asked to change their play-calling philosophies if they wanted to stay employed. Neither did nor did they make it through the entire season.

maggard leaving would definitely open the door for a new coach. A new AD would likely want his guy.
