We just have to be honest with ourselves. There is ZERO chance Des is not our coach through at least 27-28. Our best hope is that he realizes he’s not a playcaller and accepts the fact he needs help. May be a slim chance but it’s our best. IMO this isn’t a talent issue. Rice, EMU, and today were winnable games with the talent already on campus.
Dez just needs to get out of his own way and he would be a great coach. But unfortunately he will be here at least another 12 months
12? That dude is here for another 5 years, at least
There is no buyout coming anytime soon. In fact, we need to be more concerned about the budget cuts and how they impact the future of Ragin’ Cajun athletics.
He is going to have some painful cuts in the offseason. Team dinners might be beanie wennies and toast.
Nothing wrong with that! Haha
Maggard has made some solid decisions as AD, but one I constantly question is extensions to head coaches. Marlin was mediocre for years, somehow wins a tournament, and is extended several years requiring a hefty buyout. Des has one good season and the same.
Let’s be clear… no one was knocking our door down for Des after last season, and extending him as long as we did is a head scratcher. And we got duped by Marlin and his agent (he was supposedly leaving but that may have been a lie).
There is a .000001% chance that Des is not our coach until his contract runs out, unless the university actually allows someone with the funds to give money and also have some say in where we go next.
History says that will never happen
Does that someone even exist for us?
I still don’t think Maggard understands that we have sucked for so many years people don’t care about former players being coaches.
Given the state budget cuts and our failed audits, nothing will happen for a couple of years until the dust settles.
In reality, it would be bad business practice to fire a coach a year out from being named coach of the year.
We just need to sit tight and hope things work out until then.
Cant help but think about baseball with our current financial situation. Deggs is on a contract year. Per Front Office Sports, he is #25 top paid in the country. If we have another down year like last year, do we extend him or move on with a budget hire?
Edit: now that the link is posted, I see the article is over a year old. Dont know how he ranks now but it will still be up there considering there are 300+ D1 baseball programs.
I think they will yank assistant pool money across the board. Like softball make coaches have to fund raise for their assistant money.
If Deggs has another Losing season and does not make the NCAA Regionals he is gone. Don’t know if Maggard will be here to hire the next baseball coach either the way things are going.
Speculation or fact? This sentiment is the rule for everyone but basketball. That poor fella inherited a nuclear dumpster fire.
I dont think anyone is getting fired regardless of record. Gary is even safe.
Maybe not fired. But Deggs is in a contract year. He may not be retained if there’s another year like last.
I agree with that or a greatly reduced salary.
