Cajun history lesson

Is this the most common sense speech given from an Illinois official in 2 decades? Probably.

Jourdan Thibodeaux has a great video out right now on Cajuns “immigration “.

I always get a kick out of when he calls non-Cajuns, “The Americans”.

The term “Les Américains” was something I heard quite often when my grandparents and other Cajuns spoke of non-Cajun people. Getting the opportunity to grow up hearing my grandparents, family members, and their friends speaking French and knowing how people tried to destroy our culture, I can understand the distrust of “Les Américains.”

Is this the one?

That’s it.

Obviously a bunch of liberal BS.

Jourdan is an important figure in our culture. We’re fortunate that he uses his platform to educate rather than divide. Powerful (and historically accurate) message.

My grandparents only spoke French. Both passed before I was old enough to remember them. my mom understood the language but as she got older she lost the ability to speak it. She was part of the generation that had it beat out of them in school.

While I always appreciate a good history lesson on our people, I’m trying to follow here. Is Jourdan referring to the current asylum seekers or just today’s immigrants in general?

Very difficult to compare what happened back then to what is going on today.

Can’t

His point is, history repeats itself and government tactics don’t change. He’s not comparing anything.

Jourdan Thibodeaux lays down some truth:

@RaginCajun77 can you chop this out of the other thread and make this the only thread when you have a chance?

here is my takeaway and everyone is free to have their own view of things…

History gives us patterns that we are doomed to repeat, unless you learn from them. One of those patterns is that people turn a blind eye towards heavy handed tactics towards marginalized groups. It’s the “but they won’t do that towards me crowd.” By the time it starts on everyone else, it’s too late.

In these times, it’s the “illegal” but then it’s the naturalized citizen, and on and on.

We have seen attacks on free speech (both parties), and even more recently on 2A. These are not things we should turn a blind eye towards regardless of your party affiliation.

Another piece I’ll add. America doesn’t have a culture of its own. It’s the blending of multiple cultures. we should appreciate the different languages, foods and everything else that it brings.

That’s my stance. While I truly appreciate his accurate teachings of Cajun history, and our Catholic ties, I don’t see the correlation or relevance compared to these modern times. Am I missing something? It’s a night and day difference.

First, the Spanish were largely Catholic, as were the peaceful Acadians seeking political asylum. Also, as he states in his teachings, they were granted permission BEFORE relocation. Lastly, these Cajuns settled in the most undesirable and desolate place in North America, and made it the place we know and love today.

These current illegal immigrants and refugees are moving into our largest and most populated cities, and are being paid for by American citizens tax dollars, costing us between 150-185 billion dollars a year. These people also effect and influence our state and national elections. And some (not most) are truly dangerous, and are here for trafficking (sex and drugs) and other terrorism purposes… and the good suffer for the bad.

Is everything that ICE doing in good faith? Hell no, there’s bad apples with bad intentions in every federal department. But we do have laws, and legal ways to enter this country. If we aren’t going to follow these laws, we will soon be overrun and overtaxed. There has to be consequences for illegal entry, and a defense against those here for evil purposes, no matter how unpopular of a subject it is.

Feel free to educate me more on the subject if I’m off base… respectfully.

He’s comparing what happened to the Acadians to what’s now going on with ICE (at least that is what I gathered at towards the end of the video). And while I agree that some of ICE’s tactics have been over the top, we are in a different time with a lot more different problems than what happened over 200 years ago.

The Acadians were welcomed by the Spanish and seen as an asset economically and to defend the land from the British nearby. Today, there’s millions of immigrants coming in unlawfully and cutting the line to millions who are trying to do it the right way. I actually know a few Europeans who took almost a decade to get here through the immigration process the right way. While I think what Jourdan is saying has some truth, I also think there’s some differences to those times compared to now.

He could be even more important figure in our culture if was not so damn arrogant. When I watch his videos I have to consciously separate the two in my mind.

This video is full of facts and I appreciate that. Dont confuse the facts with the message. He is pointing out 2 things.

  1. Most Cajuns do not know the true historical timeline and political climate that led to the Grand Derangement. So while trying to educate, he is also trying to prove that he is smarter than most Cajuns by knowing the true history
  2. He is 100% trying to compare the Grand Derangement to current political climate with ICE. Its actually apples and oranges.
