Ehh…that would be if he went to Troy or Southern Miss, or LA Tech now.
JMU’s in a different division. And on a different trajectory than us currently.
Not the worst mentality for your head coach to have as a G6 program. Better than someone who is comfortable and wanting the retirement job route.
He will resurrect himself at JMU, and move to an ACC school in a few years.
Wish JMU would come to Lafayette next year. The community would actually be intrigued and would be a good oportunity for our current coaching staff…

I honestly want to know how good Billy would be if he were at UL now with our major financial deficits. Would he be as successful or have as big of a staff? I think he’d struggle a bit too
He is going to fail miserably. He is a terrible OC and was bailed out by the talent his staff found for him. He will not have the same staff and he will not give up OC duties.
I give him 4 years there tops.

I dont think he would be as successful now with how the transfer portal is postioned today.
He’ll have JMU in the playoff (assuming this current structure stays in place) in the near 3 years.

Just a sad situation for our Football program to be in such a financial bind (because of our leaders) to not be able to let go our 6-6 coach to hire back Billy when we had the opportunity. I am truly just sad about the situation to see him go to JMU.
Our leaders also should have never extended Des after last year which made this even worse to cut ties ever. They never learned from the Bob Marlin apathy that occurred after his extensions.
Billy will do good things there. But as a newly hired coach I’d much rather a team in rebuild mode vs taking over the team already at the top of the conference.
I mean, what were we going to do? Fire Des and hire him back?
He’s a damn good coach and chose a program that has higher support and ceiling than we do. It’s not a good reality check, but it’s the truth.

Nothing. My only point was Napier landed in the absolute best place he could and maybe ever will be based on how he coaches and the person he is. Just so happens it’s now at an in-league opponent which made our chances of winning the SBC and getting into the CFP in the future harder than already was. Everyone in the conference will have to deal with this challenge
For his sake, hopefully not. He is one of those guys that will forever be an excellent G5 coach assuming he has more resources available to him compared to his competition. If he continues to be his own OC and goes to places in the P4 where you have a much leveler playing field outside a couple spots, he’ll never have an opportunity to coach at, he will not have the same success. UF proved some of that
Billy will do well in a conference he has a giant resource/money advantage over conference peers. It was part of his formula here (when we had a money tree like CV used to say).
Billy couldn’t have come back to UL with the same success without pocketbooks opening again.
That’s my take anyway.
