Thoughts on JMU game

Defense played good. The DC knows what he is doing.

Special teams needs work. Bad blocking, and silly penalties.

The offense needs some tweaking. JMU has a tough run D, but I think we’re using Lunch wrong. Everybody in the stadium knew he was going to run on short yardage. We need to open it up more. Our OL is not going to power open holes anymore. Des needs to dust off that zone read option play and really let Lunch read it. We have something going with the deep pass. That can only get better the more that option run is successful. We need to quit micromanaging the offense with dump passes and designed dive runs.

The offense needs more than a tweak. It needs a new offensive staff.

Our offensive passing scheme and play calling is flat out garbage. Our running game concepts are solid, we just don’t have the guys up front to execute it.

Desormeaux needs to find a OC/playcaller and actually let him do the job. It does two things, takes some off of his own plate freeing himself up to be more of a CEO coach and try to get more involved in getting local support to the games. Two it is a layer of protection when the coaches seat gets a little warm.

Outside of Mizzou we were as talented or more talented than our opponents and we’ve only won one of those games.

I’ve been huge proponent of getting rid of the 2 OL coach idea and hiring a QB coach. I’d also get rid of the OL coaches and Leger. I see our development at those positions as criminally bad.

Poor coaching and play calling. QB passing at 50% is not good enough, in addition of not being able to run the ball. Third down conversion is awful at 20%. Defense gave up almost 500 yards. Besides that, we are good.

the issue is, this group has been together long enough to know they refuse to change. if their was ever a year where you call play based on the players ability this was it. hurt and down year on the OL, mobile QB. 12 personnel and bunch formations are not going to get it done with the players available. spread the field, play side line to sideline, but again they refused. when non coaches can see the train wreck and try to avoid it, but the coaches either dont see it or refuse to avoid it. whats left to do? which is why you get a lot of “ i dont knows” in press conferences. he saying he dont know how to fit the square peg into a round hole.

we need more crossing patterns with our WRs, need more motion also. Need a lot of misdirection even if we want to be a run first team our best asset is our speed this year not strength.
