The Current: Can UL afford to subsidize its football aspirations?

Maggard needs to be shown the door for this mismanagement. Maybe can get a group rate with Maggard, Dez and Broadhead

Revenue should be higher with cost of suite revenue and club tickets id imagine.

It still won’t get us out of this mess that we are in.

Not the point im trying to make.

I just hate how the article and folks round Lafayette have been trying to frame the argument that football is the sole reason for the financial fiasco. It’s almost like people, like this author, are trying to help run cover for the other problems that also contributed.

We all know what our university and athletic department is facing. There’s no way to sugar coat it. However, it’s funny how some “media” will only crap on the university in times like this. The same “media” that ignores UL and promotes TSAB constantly then says, “Why doesn’t anyone go to games, we put an article on page 37”. The same “media” that will have other universities on the front page and their local university buried.

They overprice everything instead of trying to expand the fan base at the lower price.

And get this…. Last night at the Krewe of Q event, there were roughly 20 items up for silent auction. Some nice things, a shoe, boxing gloves, jerseys, guitars, Star Wars shit (I kid you not)…… each auction item had a reserve of $1000+….

At the very end of the night as I walked out, I went to see how the auction items did. (No I didn’t bid on anything)…..

Literally only about 6/20 items had a single bid…. They obviously set the reserve way too high to begin with. Huge backfire.

Start the reserve low and let the people raise it on their own. Complete idiots !

But overall the event was well done. Haha

They do not listen when the customer speaks. This market has been telling them through actions what they will and won’t pay for since Maggard got here. The administration just will not learn.

A big swath of this base has been very vocal about the failures in fundraising, the awful third party contracts (B&N, Sodexo, Learfield, etc), the total botching of tailgate pricing, the incompetence of RCAF as a whole, and the stupid spending practices. Instead of taking constructive criticism and implementing different models in fundraising, they’ve become even more insular, more defiant, more insecure and less transparent about how to move forward.

Bryan can not run an athletic department without a blank check. He doesn’t know how and has never had to be efficient in his business practices. He is an administrator, after all.

I’m pouring over the 24-25 P&L right now and it is staggering. Like, a true work of art. How in holy hell do you spend $40mm to make $11mm?! The entirety of this athletic department grossed $11mm in revenue last year!

When Maggard leaves or is fired, which I see happening soon, you hire an AD from a small school who has had to work within a budget. Going after someone from a big program with unlimited money will not work here anymore.

Bonus would be finding an AD who previously worked in minor league baseball and knows how to create atmosphere that’s bigger than game.

Niko Yanko?

Yes, Nico Yanko would be a home run hire. He’s ambitious, outgoing, intelligent, and great communicator. He knows how to relate to us, and how do more with less.

Would love him but just got a 4 year extension in July.

Nico hasn’t proved he can make good hires. Fundraising doesn’t matter without that.

Outside of his 1st 2 hires all of Maggards have been pretty mid.

im not defending Maggard, only talking about Nico.

I understand if he uses his outside resources and is not too hard heard he will be fine. It took a call from Saban to get Napier here without it we would have been stuck with Pry. Just hopefully he listens

This is our own doing. Had they spent all of these years after the success under Napier trying do so ANYTHING to engage with the community outside of some tweets and e-mails, we would be in better shape.

But they didn’t have to because they were not held accountable. As MAT said, they said FU to the common fan, catered to big money donors, and did zero to grow the fanbase because they knew the university would cover the deficit.

Now they are behind the 8-ball with zero idea how to do what I described.

We’ve had an administration LARPing as an Ivy League university and an athletic department LARPing as an SEC achool, and it has bankrupted us.
