Step Back!

You don’t even think defense is a bright spot moving forward?

Yes, I do, but it’s gonna be hard to win a lot of games not scoring more than 14 points

We need zero hype ever again. No more talking for months about teams going to Omaha, cfp, etc. It’s always a fail

I’m just saying what would make things right in my eyes. I had very high expectations with the talent and depth on the roster. I believed the hype and my expectations are not yet wavering. I’m not saying it’s gonna happen…just that I expected them to happen heading into the season

I hope you’re right

Could be worse. Army was ranked last season and lost at home to tarleton state.

Middle Tennessee lost by 20 to Austin peay.

I believe rice will have a long season. While they beat us, our defense showed a blueprint to slow them down. Unless our defense really is that good. I’d be happy to see rice do something decent this year.

But even saying that, it wasn’t the defense that lost the game for us. The offense mustered a grand total of six points, I’m giving the other six to special teams because we weren’t even in the red zone for those. If we lose to Mcneese, Des needs to go.

The crazy part is it wasn’t the defense that lost the game for us. The offense mustered a grand total of six points, I’m giving the other six to special teams because we weren’t even in the red zone for those.

The defense certainly did not lose the game. Did Rice’s scheme give us hell the first half? Yes it did, but our defense then gave up zero points in the second half. Their QB was 7/9 throwing, but that didn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things. We gave up a total of 14 points. That should be enough to win in this era of college football.

Rice rushed for over 200 yards, but they averaged only 3.7 yards per carry. We netted 151 averaging 4.9 YPC.

Problem is we completed 35% of our passes, averaging 3.1 YPA…amassing a grand total of 88 yards.

I made the mistake of driving to the game from Houston. These are my game 1 observations:

  1. QB was terrible and so was the play calling. Should have pulled Howard to start the 2nd half. If he is our best QB, we are in for a long season with our backups.
  2. WR are horrible. Poorly run routes and can’t catch a ball.
  3. O Line was also horrible. Couldn’t block with too many holding calls that killed any semblance of a drive.
  4. Defense was really bad the first half. Played a much better second half but had no help from the offense. And, after all that, we still had a chance for a winning field goal only to be stopped by holding calls and an inability to complete a pass.
  5. Game atmosphere was BAD. The band didn’t know what to play or when to play. The sideline guy was worse. Who thought this guy was a good idea? Overall atmosphere was high schoolish at best. Embarrassing.
  6. I went to a football game and was at a rap concert. The piped in music was terrible.
  7. Facility maintenance. Drive around the athletic complex and it is embarrassing. The facilities are not maintained, the groundskeeping is horrible and the overall impression to an outsider visiting for the first time is bad. They couldn’t even cut the grass in the NEZ and put up the UL in preparation for the opening game.
  8. The baseball stadium wasn’t even set up to sell refreshments and there was no where to go for that. Seems like a lost opportunity. Went to the ticket stand and the counters were filthy. The UL store in the baseball stadium didn’t have air conditioning, just another maintenance issue.
  9. The feeling is that little was done in preparation for the opening game other than the new stadium. Everything else seemed to be ignored.
  10. The overall game atmosphere was bad. I didn’t feel like I was at an FBS game, more like Div. II. Less than 23,000 for the opening game in a new stadium. Pathetic.
  11. After this debacle, from the team’s poor performance to the administration’s poor preparation, it will be interesting to see what future attendance will be like. McNeese is probably licking their chops right now and should bring a good fan base. Any other visiting team and UL would be lucky to get 15,000 people returning. Sure hope this coaching staff can regroup and get its shit together.
  12. When you add up the pitiful team performance, a really poor game environment with the band and that horrible sideline guy, the piped in music, the bad overall complex impression given, and oh yea the loss to Rice, this is not an experience I will engage in again for a long time. And, I suspect I am not the only one who feels this way.
  13. Lastly, I drove around the campus as well. With school just starting, the overall impression of the campus was not good. Did not give the impression of an R1 university. I’ve seen the campus in better condition before. UL needs to take more pride in its physical appearance academically and athletically.

They are doing something different with the UL instead of the bushes. I heard they were going to put a metal fleur di Lis out for this season starting with the next game

Nice

And yet they had all off season to change it out for the first game. Typical BS from this university.

I got a ticket at the gate and that experience wasn’t good either. There was no one at the booth closest to the entrance of Cajun Field so I had to walk all the way to the other side which is usually the student entrance. Getting a ticket there took almost half the first quarter and I was in line before kickoff. It appeared there was only one person in the booth so not her fault.

I was very disappointed with the in game atmosphere as well. Band sucked, DJ in the student section needs to go. Last year was so much better.

See bolded responses.

I fear mediocrity has become an acceptable standard. It could be so much better.

Great game day experience for my crew. Never had to wait in line for anything. Congrats to the admin in pulling out all the stops.

We had a great time (other than losing to f***** Rice), but I’ve never been more certain that we are a school with maybe 8k fans of the team.

The rest of the people are there to socialize - on the hill, on the sidewalks, in empty sections, and now DEFINITELY in the premium seats and McElligot club
