Softball is well on its way to the same fate as LaTech WBB. It’s a sad state of affairs that we’ve done so poorly in the portal which tells me our staff is not able to convince players to make the move to join our program.

And only 1 with a few innings of D1 experience.
This was always the end of the road..
When other schools (with better campuses, night life, facilities, amenities, etc) started throwing money into the sport, all that we were left with was the plaques on the wall to point at and say “we used to be really important!”
There is no afterlife in softball. There is no career to be had. I cant think of another sport where you graduate or play out your eligibility and then have basically zero paths to making money off of it.
If Texas Tech offers me $20k to ride the bench and I can pay off any student debt I have while earning a decent degree, I’d be stupid not to take it.

AUSL has 6 teams right now, hopefully they will expand the more that ESPN backs it.
I think if we can get a tradition back up and running, I think we can be good.
For the majority of student-athletes there isn’t an afterlife. The number that make it to the NFL, NBA, MLB, WNBA, pale in comparison to the total number of NCAA student-athletes. The spending we see today is a problem and it is destroying collegiate athletics. I wish there was a simple solution, but unless caps on spending are put in place this is our future. You hire coaches who can win conference championships and get you to the post season.

ESPN will never promote pro softball anywhere near the degree they promote the WNBA, despite WNBA being definitely a worse and more unwatchable product than say…mid-major conference softball.
