High School playoffs are a joke

Erath played 1-8 Bogalusa tonight. It was 50-0 in the 2nd Q. They had like 2 people in the stands. Those poor kids have a 4 hour bus ride home tonight.

WHY ???

But it has to be “fair”.

To be fair, Bogalusa was the last team in after playing a really tough schedule. Quarterfinal team in 2023, overall 2 seed in 2022. Just having a down year. Complain all you want, these big blowouts aren’t as common as people say lately.

But what do their teams from 2 & 3 years ago have to do with them deserving to be in the playoffs?

Nothing. It’s obvious we either need to do away with select/non select or go back to 4 classifications. That game last night should have never happened.

This is what happens when you have a split because “everyone wants to have a fair chance” to get into the playoffs. You end up having winless and 1-win teams make it, and some even forfeit the first round so they don’t have to go through the blowout.

Showing that they’re a decent program having a down year. Their non-district schedule is 3 5A schools and a top 2A school. That’s how they snuck in as the final team in the bracket.

There’s much more to the split than “everyone gets a trophy”. It started heading this way when the 5A & 4A schools got a rule change forcing Evangel & John Curtis to play in 2A. It evolves every year, next year 5A won’t be split anymore. The big problem is the Class/Division change. We actually play 3A in the playoffs go to the quarterfinals regularly but end up facing schools almost twice our size at that point. This change was passed by the Executive Board without input from principals. Now, we all know how it was and how it is now in Louisiana but it’s nothing compared to other states.

-Texas has always been split

-Florida has free agency DURING the season with kids transferring and playing for the new school the next week

-In the northeast is even crazier. Teams can refuse to play a playoff opponent and buy another game instead

-California is another free agency state with the top schools brining in players from all over the place

One thing you will also notice once playoffs start that has nothing to do with the split. Teams in different areas of the state play the game much different.

-Shreveport/Bossier doesn’t play defense, it’s like the old Big 12

-Top NOLA schools are great but the rest are below average (Due to open enrollment magnet schools recruiting)

-CENLA is soft with rarely any athletes besides ASH

-Lake Charles has athletes but also soft with no defense

-Acadiana and Baton Rouge area are much more old school physical than any other area. There’s always real hitting and strong dominant lineman.

Who cares if they played a tough schedule? They weren’t even remotely competitive against it. They went 1-9 and lost every game aside from 1 by more than 20 points and 5 games by more than 40. They can be a historically good program and not have belonged in the playoffs this season. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Texas has WAY more schools.

If we’re going to keep the split, then fine. Reduce the number of playoff slots. Down year or not, a 1-8 team should never make a playoff.

GET OFF MY LAWN!

OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUD!

That’s what everyone sounds like this morning. If it really bothers yall that much, just don’t watch.

Wait up, dude!

Maybe if we can get this momentum to translate to college football, our team is still in the running for the College Football Playoffs! WHOOOO!

We did go 13-1 4 years ago! That’s gotta count for something!

That’s exactly what the P2 is trying to do. Word in the baseball circle is a “Pro League” where teams would license brands from school (P2) and an “Amateur League” which would be more like the old college athletics.

IMHO, the split should cater to the smaller schools. If you’re Vermilion Catholic playing Gueydan, ok I get it. Smaller schools usually feel the brunt of the differences especially when it comes to enrollment numbers (John Curtis playing West St. Mary in a playoff game is obviously crazy). The smart thing to do would be to allow private schools like LCA and John Curtis to play up to the levels of 4A and 5A through a particular formula that would allow them to compete with the higher classification of schools. The problem is that it’s divided between select and non-select that has already mixed in public and private schools. Just let them all compete against one another. Right now, Acadiana should be allowed to play Destrehan and Mandeville as much as Jesuit should be allowed to play Neville. This should all be catered more to 1A and 2A.

Easy solution do away with the spilt and if you are a school of choice you play up a division.

Either you fully split or don’t split at all. Districts shouldn’t be a mix of select and non-select.

The system seems to get worse every year.

Alot of folks need to sip some coffee this morning.

They should get rid of schools of choice, Acadiana has been recruiting players for years and getting them in through their “Business Academy”.

Since we’re suggesting alternatives…..

  1. No more select/non-select.
  2. Go from 5 classifications to 4.
  3. Here’s the kicker: institute promotion/relegation. Win your district and move up a classification. Finish last in your district and move down a classification.
  4. Over time, schools will be grouped based upon level of competition.
  5. This should be decided on the field by the players, not the principals, the boosters, the lawyers nor the politicians.
