UL eliminates six positions, closes sustainability office amid $25 million budget crisis

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette announced the elimination of six positions Tuesday in an attempt to address a $25 million deficit announced last week.

In an email to faculty obtained by The Acadiana Advocate, Jaimie Hebert, UL’s interim president, said the cuts affected three divisions. The Office of Sustainability and Community Engagement was closed, according to the email. The Office of Communications and Marketing and the Office of Auxiliary Services, were restructured.

Curious who remains in the Office of Communications and Marketing…

Is Jamie going to eventually explain what happened?

In a government budget deficit, the first cuts are unfilled positions. Second comes actual employees and areas that are deemed wasteful like The Office of Sustainability (green energy, recycling, etc). Many of these “Offices” can simply be run inside another area with less people. That’s when you’ll see restructuring which will combine areas that are sometimes duplicates of each other. Overall, this restructuring is good for the university in the long run.

Woke ass positions that no doubt T Slow made. I mean green shit

T-joe had been checked out the last few years. Pretty much let the inmates run the asylum.

UL faces $25 million deficit, interim president reveals

A key area of this article really lays it all out there.

The interim president told audience members that while online and graduate student numbers grew over the past decade, the university’s full-time undergraduate enrollment — where it makes the most money, as each student generates $12,000 per year — has declined by 1,700 students over the past 10 years. That resulted in a $20 million loss in revenue. “They are the students who really pay the bills,” he said.

During that same period, he noted, UL added 600 staff positions, increasing payroll by $40 million. He emphasized that the total gap of $60 million has actually been closed to $25 million. “We’ve exhausted all of our reserves, and we’re in a position where we have to address this $25 million.”

What stands out to me is leadership watched as enrollment dipped by a little over 1,000 students between 2015 and 2019 and failed to tighten the belt. Instead, they continued to allow overspending and enrollment dipped further partly fueled by the pandemic. Sooner or later the shit was going to hit the fan. Failing to address the audits was the catalyst. It doesn’t require a PhD to understand that if your expenses are greater than your revenue for extended periods your net losses are going to mount up, and you have a financial crisis on your hands.

I wonder how many of those 600 staff members actually generated value, rather than just bureaucratic BS.

T Slow was just a cajun mafia figure put in to hide the sins of the past. Good riddance

Coonass mafia happened and an extremely woke president essentially sacrificed the university to push an agenda.

I’ve run the numbers and the undergraduate student population has decreased by 1700 students under T-Joe.

1700 additional undergraduate students would have us working with roughly a $4M deficit. So his dumbass policies have caused this.

We can’t hate the authement, Blanco, T Joe, Pratt era enough .. personal gain was the mantra

Let it geaux already champ.

We’re in a $25 million deficit. I know you idolize T-Joe but he’s gonna be criticized for a bit here. Get used to it.

As he should be! Abject failure to uphold the integrity of his post. It’s completely understandable why we are the most hated university in the state.

I’ve never heard of some of the 2-year schools.

Which 2 or 4 year can be eliminated and/or consolidated?

Based on no data whatsoever’s (aside from the SUNO graduation rate which is historically bad) maybe:

SUNO

LSUE

LSUA

Combine Tech and Monroe?

Yall do yall, but god dang yall some broken records.

P.S. I idolize no man.

I would stop short of saying that. We have been hated long before any of this transpired. Those who hate us are just dunking on us now and rightfully so. It was less than a year ago a MH puppet was on RP talking about the dire straits Tech was in and ridiculous rumors of them shuttering athletics all while praising our administration.

Not accepting your place as a doormat in the world will make you hated. Obviously I disagree with the emphasis we have placed on certain issues (R1 status) and some of the ways we have chosen to grow (lowering academic standards under the guise of being more inclusive). I don’t think that’s why we’re hated though. I for one am gonna continue to a proud Cajuns fan and UL alum. We need to get back to graduating students though and stop talking about our supporters like they are cavemen because they enjoy athletics.

But he’s ONE OF US!!!

Wouldn’t surprise me if that mentality is still prevalent and we hire some politico like Craig Romero to “fix the problem”.

Maybe this is one of those thREDs you should mute. It apparently hits a little close to home for you.

Will do sir!
