Best of the Rest: Cajuns Baseball

Can’t remember if it was Jr or Sr year but he got hot at the plate during the final third of the season. I’ve never been more happy for a player in all my years watching Cajuns baseball. Got into a literal hollering match with my seat mates that same season because they wanted to bench Thurm for (I think) Thad Griffin. Madness.

2013 was the year I went all in on Cajuns baseball. I always followed it before that, but as a broke college Junior, my girlfriend (wife now) and I went to pretty much every game using my ID and her sisters. With food, an outing for less than $20. Good old days.

Given that, I’m gonna have to say Dex Kjerstad. Incredible bat. I think he ended up signing with the Royals (?) late. The 2014 lineup was already unreal, but him in there would’ve been cool to see.

Caleb Adams and Dex Kjerstad were major problems at the plate and with their glove. Very under appreciated.

Caleb Adams was giving hitting lessons in The Village for a while after his playing days.

Kyle Clement (Just bought our new work truck from his families dealership)

Dallas Morris (was a tough out in my fundraiser ragball tournaments in The Village)

Jeffries Tatford

Phillip Hawke (I’ll never forget the HR he hit over the trees in right onto the track)

A more recent guy, but someone who embodied the grittiness of Cajun baseball, Heath Hood. Other guys like Roccaforte and Debo got more attention, but Hoodie just went to work every day and did his job.

Heath Hood was my favorite position player in the Deggs era not named Julian Brock.

(I know Julian was a Robe recruit but he played under Deggs)

Steven Feehan. Jefferies Tatford. Hunter Moody. Danny Farquhar. Ryan Leonards. Chase Compton. Stefan Trosclair. Hogan Harris. Wyatt Marks. Dylan Moore. Hayden Cantrelle. Tyler Robertson. Carson Roccoforte. Spencer Arrighetti.

Those are all legends though..

Another one (for the attitude) is Justin Hemme. Think his nickname was “Mr Happy” b/c he wasn’t out there to f around.

Hit the longest HR I ever saw off LSU’s #1 in a mid-week win. Dude had serious power.

In that case, my answer is forever John Taylor, Dylan Butler, and Brennan Breaux.

ALL Cajun baseball players are legends.

When I think of absolutely monster power Todd Lott and Steven Sensley come to mind. But Todd was much more consistent.

When it comes to power, how about Scott Hawkins?

Lott is another one that had very little help in the lineup. Endless talent though.

Game winning HR in BR is a core memory. Pulverized that pitch.

What always amazed me about Hawkins swing is how strong his hands were. Often seemed like he was just swinging to make contact and the ball would travel 400+ feet.

Hawk a dog for sure.
