The federal government temporarily increased the FMAP% during COVID to encourage states to add more Medicaid recipients to the program(medicaid expansion program)The state budget is getting squeezed by Medicaid funding. Our FMAP% has decreased by over 10% since COVID ended. . This means the state has to fund a bigger % of Medicaid budget. For context, LA Medicaid budget is $19 billion this year–10% of that is $1.9B increase that the state is responsible for. The overall state budget is $45B–42% of our state budget is spent on Medicaid. The majority of the state budget is protected with a couple of exceptions–higher education being one of the exceptions–this is one of the reasons for the budget cuts in higher education.

All they have to do is cut all the programs and salary for the chief sustainability officer, and that will probably cover most of that 5%. They had to replant a campus “gardens” like 5 times because the grass crew though it was just over grown weeds lol.

I mentioned this on RP when Landry was elected. Edwards and both Houses kicked the can down the road knowing full well that Federal Funding was going to be reduced after the Emergency Act expired. None of them want to call a special session to look at what is protected in the State Constitution.

They’ve kicked the can on Medicaid about as far as they can kick it. I’ve seen reimbursement rates increased for services on the mental health and addiction side and I assume the same is happening with physical healthcare. Frankly, the money to do these things doesn’t exist. Major reform is needed.

Not when 43% of the population of the state is on it right now. Sadly, not one else is going to come in state to compete with Blue Cross, United Health and a few others to help bring down cost of health insurance. Cigna told me there is not enough premium to be written in Louisiana and too many people with health conditions. Sadly, you are better off working for a corporation or business domiciled out of state and you can get o thneir benefit packages at lower cost.

I’m on Anthem of Virginia, a family of 4 with the highest coverage, and it costs us about $220 a month. Wife alone would be $600 a month at her job

Yes, I’m self-employed and my cost today is $1450 per month for spouse and myself with a $7500 Deductible per person. If you are on a group medical plan for a company domiciled out of state, you are in a much better plan.

$14k a month? WTF?
I was self employed for 8 of my first 10 years out of college. Swear I would raise my family in South Louisiana and not move to Houston.
In 2013, got a notice from BlueCross that my self employed family health coverage plan did not meet any of the required tiers of the new Obamacare law. Come Jan 1 of 2015, my premiums for this new plan that met the criteria would increase from $600/mo to $1,100/mo.
October of 2013, took a job with a company in Houston and moved the family out here in Spring 2014. The health insurance was the last straw that convinced me.

Understandable….but I hope athletics cuts are minimal. Outside of the Ivy League, Athletic success drives a University’s growth whether administration likes it or not and they need to understand this.
