Six games down, six to go. And if the first half of Louisiana’s football season has taught us anything, it’s that this team is capable of playing some pretty good football. It’s also capable of making things a whole lot harder than they need to be.

At 4-2 overall and 1-1 in Sun Belt Conference play, the Cajuns have reached the halfway point with plenty to be encouraged about. They’ve developed a strong rushing attack, played competitive football against quality opponents, and put themselves in position to have a successful season.

But Saturday night’s 32-31 collapse against was a reminder that there is still plenty of work to be done.

Blowing a 12-point fourth-quarter lead against a rival is difficult enough to stomach. Doing so after seemingly having the game under control makes it even worse. And while one game shouldn’t define an entire season, it certainly exposed some issues that have been lingering beneath the surface.

Through six games, Louisiana is averaging 29.5 points and 382 yards per contest while allowing 21.5 points and 303 yards. On paper, those numbers look pretty respectable.

But as we all know, football isn’t played on paper.

So, let’s hand out some midseason grades, take a look at where the Cajuns have excelled, where they’ve struggled, and what we might expect over the final six games.

You are too generous with your grading. Passing game is an F. Running game, without the QB running is a C, with the QB running a B. QB overall, maybe a B-. WR’s & TE’s no more than a C. Pretty average. Also, We have not beaten a good team yet. Competitive against quality opponents, please.

The way I look at it, they did fine on their first five minor tests of this first semester, but they absolutely bombed their major grade exam last weekend.

I know some may say some of us are putting too much emphasis on the LA Tech game, but I don’t think so. After all the back and forth, after the results from the two games under Hud, after all the talk of if we have progressed beyond them as a program, we got beat. Again. 9th in a row.

I agree. Tech was the game that we absolutely had to win because I had thought we had improved as a program since we last played them.

Losing the game against La Tech boils down to the continued struggles Dez has with playcalling on offense. We’ve missed several opportunities in the first six games to put points on the board in the 1st Quarter. Some of it due to turnovers, but more due to poor playcalling. My fear is Dez’s stubbornness will never change, and this season will be another 6-7 effort.

If we go 6-7, Dez needs to receive walking papers!

If we go 6-7, that would mean we made and lost another bowl game. Since we made that bowl game, the big question is: Will his contract be automatically renewed?

For the record, beginning of the season I said that we were a 7-5 team this year. I still hold on that record.

Team: I would love to be proved wrong.
